Summer Stanfield’s goal for the season was to qualify for state. The Bartram Trail freshman could not have envisioned producing a pair of personal bests and bringing home a state championship in the process.
To her own surprise, Stanfield won the 200-yard individual medley at the Class 3A state championships this fall with a time of 2 minutes, 3.31 seconds.
In addition to earning a gold medal last month in Stuart, Stanfield is The Record’s 2015 Girls Swimmer of the Year.
“I really think the best thing was being part of such an amazing team and being surrounded by such great people,” Stanfield said. “A lot of people don’t have that opportunity and don’t get to do that like I did. I was surrounded by the best people and that was a once-in-a-lifetime chance.”
Bartram Trail’s girls finished as the Class 3A runner-up, broke four school records, won district and conference titles and had its first individual state champion in six years.
