Peeples sets 100 fly record

Santa Fe Catholic senior Derek Peeples turns on the speed to win the 100 fly and break the county record at the Polk County Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday at Rowdy Gaines Pool.

WINTER HAVEN – Move over Duncan Sherrard, Derek Peeples has broken your record.

The Santa Fe Catholic senior rewrote the record books at the Polk County Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday, winning both the 100 butterfly and the 200 freestyle. But his 51.83 time in the 100 fly broke Sherrard’s 18-year-old mark of 52.01. It was the only record that fell at this year’s meet.

Peeples said he was thinking about breaking the record for four years and often kidded about breaking it with Sherrard, who is the assistant coach at the University of North Carolina and was an All-American swimmer for the Florida Gators.

“(Sherrard) texted me and he is happy for me,” Peeples said. “I was just trying my hardest the whole time. This is pretty high up to have my name in that record book and I’ll be happy to see if someone else breaks it or what happens with it.”

The Winter Haven girls (188) and the George Jenkins boys both repeated as county team champions and both won the meet after strong finishes in the 400 freestyle relay, where the Blue Devil girls (3:57.33) took first, earning 28 points to nip second-place Lakeland (164) for the title.

“It was harder this year. Lakeland had some phenomenal swimmers,” Winter Haven head coach Lori Edwards said. “I knew it would come down to the relays. But they pulled it all together and didn’t quit. They are awesome.”

The Jenkins boys (177) finished third in the 400 free relay, fetching 20 points, which was enough to beat out second-place Winter Haven (168) for the county title by eight points. The Eagles also picked up first-place finishes in the 200-free relay, the 50- and 100-freestyles — both by senior Ashton Winters — and the 200 IM by Luke Lucido.

“They knew they had to step up and what they had to do,” George Jenkins head coach Jenn Gosline said. “It was heart attack time (during the 400) but it makes it the best part of the meet. Those four boys are not your regular club swimmers, they swim four times a week in the offseason. They really have developed.”

Lakeland freshman Kelly Schmaedeke has been swimming since the second grade and she’s learned to write her race and lane assignments on her hand with a magic marker. It paid dividends at her first county meet when she took first place in the 200 free (2:03.09) and the 500 free (5:29.76).

“I was a little nervous today because second place was only four seconds behind me and this week I was pretty sore, but I just pushed pretty hard,” Schmaedeke said. “I wasn’t expecting to win two races but I knew I had it in me. “

Jenkins senior Rachel Lulf won her fourth consecutive 100-backstroke title, and this year she did it after returning from a concussion suffered in July.

“It was always like a dream to just come out and win all four years. I came off not a very good swim in the 100 freestyle and just put all my focus on my 100 back. I knew as soon as I got in the water, it was going to be my event.”

Oasis Christian senior Hannah Howard won the 200 IM (2:19.89) and the 100 breaststroke. She is 14-0 this season in individual events, including seven straight 100-breast wins and she had to hold off another top freshman, Winter Haven’s Marlo Dilorenzo in the 200 IM.

“Marlo is a great swimmer and she really pushed me. I went that fast because I had competition,” Howard said.

Bartow junior Kimmy Chang won her first county title, posting a 1:03.07 in the 100 butterfly.

“I was just trying to go in and keep my best time and have fun while racing. I never even thought about (winning a title).”

Other first-place winners included Frostproof junior Dalton Hanger (1:02.49) in the 100 breast, Bartow senior Aaron Hull (54.43) in the 100 back, Tenoroc senior Jonathan Sawyer (4:56.05) in the 500 free, All Saints’ Anna Henricks (56.01) in the 100 free and Lakeland Christian senior Tori Green (26.64) in the 50 free.
