October 18, 2015—Defending state champion Jacksonville Bolles, tuning up for the championship season, swept the team titles Saturday at the 52nd Woodson Invitational.

In the boys competition, Bolles won with 385 points followed by host Pine Crest with 226 and Boca Raton with 166.

The girls competition was closer with Bolles edging Pine Crest, 348-323.  Boca Raton was third with 196 points.

Pine Crest junior Marta Ciesla earned the Ann Marshall Award as the meet’s outstanding girl swimmer.

Ciesla, 17, won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:49.53, a junior national cut time, and 50-yard freestyle in 22.89, dipping below 23 seconds for the first time this season.

Ciesla was also a member of the winning 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays. This week’s district meet will be Ciesla’s final high school appearance. She has opted not to compete in the region and state meets in favor of representing the U.S. on the junior team at the FINA/Airweave World Cup Series in Doha and Dubai.

University School sophomore Patrick Groters, who trains at Pine Crest, earned the Andy Coan Award for most outstanding boy swimmer of the meet.

Groters, a six-time national record holder for Aruba, won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:53.37 and 500-yard freestyle in 4:36.36, both huge time drops for best times from 1:59.77 and 4:51.88.

Both Marshall and Coan were at the meet to present the awards. Coan, a former world record holder, is battling his way back after being diagnosed with the auto-immune disease Guillain-Barre syndrome. Coan set the world record in the 100-meter freestyle at age 16 and then qualified for the boycotted 1980 U.S. Olympic team.

The Woodson competition was the final tune-up for the championship season that begins this week with the district meets. Bolles hosts the Oct. 21District 2-1A meet and Pine Crest will compete in the Oct. 22 District 10-1A meet at St. Andrew’s.

Groters, 16, a third-place finisher in the 500 freestyle at last year’s state meet, was encouraged by his swims.

“This gives me a lot of confidence,” Groters said. “I am still swimming through these meets. I’m not shaved or rested. I was shocked at first by the times but then I also knew I should be able to do those times.

“In the morning I didn’t feel I would go 1:57,” Groters said. “I looked at the scoreboard and thought that did not just come out of me. It was surprising. At night I felt more confident. I knew there were two Bolles swimmers who had gone 55. I hadn’t done that all season. Then I wondered if their 55s were state times. I got in the water and answered my own question.”

Bolles boys piled on the points by sweeping all three relays and got three individual wins from Wiley Watson in the 50-yard freestyle, Tyler Rice in the 100-yard freestyle and James Dougherty in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Pine Crest kept it close in the girls competition after winning two relays and four individual events.

Westminster Academy sophomore Jessica Nava was a double winner in the 100-yard butterfly in 55.00 and 100-yard backstroke in 56.77.

Maia Goldstein of University School and Austin Fields of Pine Crest won the 1-meter diving titles.
